The daughter of Wendell Wyatt Crow, a lawyer, and Bernice (née Cain), a piano teacher, Sheryl Suzanne Crow was born in Kennett, Missouri. She has a younger brother named Steven as well as two elder sisters named Kathy and Karen. During her senior year, she also joined the National FFA Organization, the Pep Club, and the National Honor Society. She was also named Paperdoll Queen in a celebrity-judged beauty competition. Crow taught music at Kellison Elementary School in Fenton, Missouri, after earning his degree from the University of Missouri. She was able to sing in bands on the weekends because she was a teacher during the week. She later met Jay Oliver, a local artist and record producer.
